La Patum de Berga
For five days, between May 29 and June 2, Berga becomes the nerve center of the festival in Catalonia. The troupes, the parades, the fire, the pyrotechnic devices, the music and the fun take to the streets of this Barcelona town to celebrate La Patum: the festival of the senses and feelings. The origin of this tradition, which in 2005 was inscribed by UNESCO on the List of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, dates back to the entremeses, paratheatrical performances that were part of the medieval Corpus Christi processions.
Patum is a popular festival born and derived from ancient medieval theater performances, where the demons and beasts dance, enchanted by the roar of the drums and under the fire. The Patum is not only made up of the troupes and the jumps, but also of all the people who gather together, dancing, in the Plaza de Sant Pere. And it is precisely when there is no room for even a pin in the square, that feelings of mystery, joy, passion, meditation come together… This is the particular way of celebrating Corpus Christi in Berga.
