International Museum Day is celebrated every year on 18 May, a day that is celebrated in numerous cities that take part in this festive day. And, of course, the city of Barcelona could not be less, and has been taking part in this day for 19 years now.
The aim of this day is to promote culture and give recognition to museums and cultural centres. For this reason, 19 years ago, Barcelona created a proposal that today is known as the ‘Night of the Museums’.
Each edition takes place on the Saturday evening closest to International Museum Day (18 May). This 2025, the 19th edition will be held on the evening of Saturday 17 May, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.
In this celebration, various museums, centres and cultural spaces in the city open their doors free of charge to their facilities and exhibitions for this event. If you want to know which museums are taking part in this event, you can consult the list of those participating in this initiative.
To make this event even more special, there are different centres and museums that prepare other proposals in addition to their visits, such as talks, family activities, workshops or even concerts. It is a festival made for sharing new experiences with family, friends or couples.
Remember that, on this day, as it is a highly renowned initiative attended by many people, there are usually long queues. For this reason, it is important to prioritise the visits you most want to make, and to know how to find the best way to get to the centres you want to visit.
You should bear in mind that many of the centres that organise activities have a maximum number of places, and therefore it may be necessary to book in advance in order to take part in their activities, even though they are free of charge.
On 18 May, most of the city’s museums also open their doors free of charge during their usual opening hours, along with other activities on offer. It is advisable to check the website of the museum you are interested in visiting to make sure that it is free to visit, and if it has organised other activities in parallel to its facilities.
Don’t forget that the Aerobus takes you from Barcelona Airport to the city centre 365 days a year, with its 24-hour service, so you can go wherever you want, whenever you want.
And you, what are you going to visit?
