Markets you can’t miss
- La Boqueria (Mercat de Sant Josep) – This is one of Barcelona’s most iconic and oldest markets. Its mix of colours, flavours and people makes it a must-see, as it is considered the best market in the world. In this building, constructed in 1860, you will find everything from exotic fruits to seafood freshly brought in from the port.
- Santa Caterina – Its undulating, multicoloured roof is as photogenic as its interior. It dates back to 1848, but was remodelled in 2005. The renovated market combines history and design, with stalls selling local produce and small bars where you can enjoy a tapa.
- Sant Antoni – The first market in Barcelona built outside the city walls. Following its recent renovation, it now boasts a spectacular iron structure. In addition to its food court, on Sundays it hosts a market selling books, comics and antiques. A classic among Barcelona locals.
- El Ninot – In the Eixample neighbourhood, it offers a quieter and more authentic atmosphere. Ideal for discovering seasonal products and trying traditional recipes in its market bars.
- La Concepción – Known as the ‘flower market’, it combines food and flower stalls in a modernist setting filled with light. Perfect for a relaxed and charming visit. Opened in 1888, it serves as a major social hub in the district. It has now been refurbished, is fully functional and offers a programme of gastronomic activities.
Go early, chat with the stallholders, try something new and wander through the aisles. Every market has its own rhythm, its own people and its own flavour.
