If you are from Barcelona, you will surely know the old penitentiary centre of La Model, a penitentiary centre in the city of Barcelona which was inaugurated on 9 June 1904, and which offered service for 113 years. La Model was built with the aim of being an exemplary penitentiary centre, intended to be a model to follow.

Today it is a memorial space in which the history of the centre is recovered and interpreted, recovering more than a century of history and keeping the memory of La Model alive. The prison was of great importance during the 20th century in Barcelona, and housed thousands of prisoners, including political prisoners during the Franco era, for many years.

Today, you can visit the site free of charge, and you can pre-book a free guided tour to learn more about the history of the space, the context in which it was created, the reasons for its architecture, and how it has evolved over the years.

However, if you prefer to visit without a guide, you can do so without prior reservation on the following days of each week:

  • Friday: from 16:00 to 18:00 h
  • Saturdays: from 10:00 to 14:00 h and from 16:00 to 18:00 h
  • Sundays: from 10:00 to 14:00 h.

The La Model Memorial Space is located at Carrer d’Entença, 155. And, although it is currently a large memorial centre in Barcelona, there is a development project planned for the future, to convert La Model into a space for facilities and social housing and a new urban park.
