What to eat in summer

Traveling in summer is synonymous with freedom, new landscapes… and improvised plans. But if there is something that can make the difference between a round day and a regular one, that is the food. Because yes: eating well is also part of the trip.

Here are some ideas for you to eat tasty food, hydrate well and keep the summer mood wherever you are: on the road, flying or already settled at your destination.

  1. Eating well while traveling: options for long trips

Whether you’re traveling by car, train or plane, one thing remains the same: your body needs energy (and your stomach doesn’t understand delays or traffic jams). These options are light, practical and heat-resistant:

  • Cold salads in a jar or tupper: rice, pasta, legumes or quinoa with toppings to taste. Dress just before eating and that’s it.
  • Wraps or soft sandwiches: pita bread, wheat or whole wheat tortilla with ingredients that will keep well out of the fridge: hummus, grilled chicken, fresh cheese…
  • Chopped or dehydrated fruit: watermelon and melon are always a winner, but you can also take grapes, cherries or even apples with cinnamon.
  • Cold drinks and infusions: carry a thermos bottle with water with lemon, cold tea or coconut water. Summer dehydrates, and you don’t negotiate with that.

Table with summer dishes: watermelon and other fruits.

  1. What to eat when you arrive: dishes with a vacation flavor

You’re already at your destination, with your swimsuit drying in the sun and that traveler’s appetite asking for new things. What’s to eat? What the summer cries out for:

  • Gazpacho, ajoblanco or salmorejo: classics that refresh and nourish, each with its own regional touch.
  • Fresh grilled or fried fish: if you are near the sea, take advantage of it. Sea bass, sardines, calamari…
  • Salads and salads with pickles or seafood: perfect to keep you light and tasty.
  • Local tapas and raciones: if you are traveling in Spain or Southern Europe, look for places where you can try a variety without going over budget (and without getting out of your chair).

  1. Sweet chapter: refreshments that brighten up any trip

Because there is no summer without ice cream, and no afternoon without something sweet (and cold):

  • Artisan ice cream: it doesn’t matter if it’s pistachio or mango with chili. The important thing is that it is local and made with love.
  • Natural slushies: lemon, coffee or tropical fruits. Hydrating and delicious.
  • Smoothies and shakes: with yogurt, ice and fruit. A quick and healthy snack.
  • Frozen fruit: frozen grapes, strawberries or sliced bananas are an ideal sweet snack if you travel by car or have a freezer in your accommodation.

  1. Traveling while eating: when gastronomy is part of the destination

There are those who travel for monuments… and those who travel for food. If you recognize yourself in the latter group, this block is for you:

  • Local gastronomic routes: each region has its own jewel. From Idiazabal cheese in the north, to potatoes with mojo from the Canary Islands.
  • Markets and food trucks: ideal to eat well without sitting in a restaurant. Taste, walk around, taste again.
  • Street food and typical snacks: empanadas in Galicia, calamari sandwiches in Madrid, pintxos in Donosti, pan tumaca in Barcelona…

In short: eat well, live better

Traveling in summer doesn’t mean resigning yourself to eating the first thing you find. With a little planning (and a lot of hunger for discovery), you can turn every meal into an experience.

  • Eat fresh.
  • Hydrate.
  • Explore new flavors.
  • And if you can… take a picture before devouring the dish.
